A common question we hear at AIM Athletic is whether it’s possible to lose fat in specific areas of the body through targeted exercises. While it would be great if doing extra crunches could slim your waist, the reality is that spot reduction isn’t how the body works. Fat loss happens systemically, meaning your body draws energy from fat stores across the entire body when in a caloric deficit. Where fat is lost first depends on factors like genetics, gender, muscle mass, and even the type of fat stored in certain areas.
Genetics largely dictate where you store and shed fat, while hormones play a significant role as well. Women typically carry more fat in their hips and thighs, while men are more prone to abdominal fat, and these patterns influence how fat loss unfolds. Areas with more muscle mass may appear leaner sooner as fat decreases, as muscle creates shape and firmness, even with some fat remaining. Gravity can also affect how lean certain areas appear, with regions like the upper arms or shoulders often looking more toned faster than areas like the hips or thighs.
It’s important to focus on overall body composition rather than targeting specific areas. A balanced approach combining strength training, proper nutrition, and recovery helps build muscle and reduce fat across the body. This is the foundation of our small group personal training, one-on-one sessions, and active rehabilitation programs at AIM Athletic. These programs are designed to help you build strength and confidence while improving overall fitness and body composition.
Although you can’t control where fat is lost, staying consistent with your workouts and nutrition will lead to meaningful changes over time. If you need help determining your body composition, check out on online calculator, or come in for InBody scan at AIM.
